Some scientists are very worried that the 5G network, which is coming soon could interfere with weather satellites.
“The way 5G is being introduced could seriously compromise our ability to forecast major storms, in the end it could make the difference between life and death.
We are very concerned about this” said Tony McNally of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts in Reading.
The closeness of a natural frequency to that of the 5G network could lead to difficulties for earth-orbiting satellites.
One example is the 23.8 gigahertz (GHz) frequency, where water vapors emits a faint signal at this natural wavelength and this data is been monitored by the weather satellites and through this information, forecasters are able to know how a storm or weather system is likely to develop.
The problem now is that some 5G phone network can transmit a frequency similar to that emitted water vapor and so it will produce a signal that looks very like its presence in the atmosphere.
“This will make it difficult to tell the difference, and so would have to discard that data, that would compromise our ability to make accurate forecasts.” Said by Niels Bormann, one of the reading weather Centre.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is recommending a -55 decibel watts. The U.S. is proposing a weaker -20 decibel Watts for controlling 5G from influencing weather satellites.
Forecasters says that US move has promise to lobby other nations so as to limit the use of crucial frequencies to preserve their ability to provide accurate forecasts.
The Department of commerce also says that “it strongly supports the administration’s policy to promote U.S leadership in securing 5G networks and at the same time sustaining and improving critical government and scientific missions.
“But the more we lose, the greater the impact will be” says Jordan Gerth, a meteorologist at the University of Wisconsin Madison.
Forecasters accuse phone operators of ransacking the radio spectrum for wavelengths to exploit and regulators of failing to protect the natural frequencies vital for earth observation from space.
We all hope that these problem will be solved.
