On Tuesday Qualcomm announced the first ultrasonic fingerprint reader which is called the 3D sonic sensor. The ultrasonic fingerprint reader uses sound waves to read your fingerprint to unlock your phone.
The ultrasonic fingerprint sensor developed by Qualcomm uses sound waves to map your fingerprint based on the pressure of sound waves coming out of your skin. The ultrasonic 3D sensor is very powerful enough to read as deep as the level of your pores when it scans your print.
On Tuesday Alex Katouzian, the Qualcomm senior vice president of mobile technology said at the company’s conference that “This is the future of fingerprint technology.” Analysts at consumer research firm IHS Markit predicts that 100 million phones will have the ultrasonic fingerprints sensors by 2019.
The 3D sonic sensor was designed to fit underneath your phone screen so that you can be able to unlock your phone by putting your finger or thumb in the center of your phone screen or your home screen.
One of the reason why the 3D sensor is better than the face ID and other unlocking features is that the face ID and iris scanner are considered as a secured way for mobile payments but Android won’t support them as mobile payments because hackers and security experts use photos to trick some optical fingerprint readers. But with the Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint reader you can be able to do your mobile payments.
An optical fingerprint reader takes a photo of your finger to determine the pattern of ridges and valleys that makes your fingerprint unique. Take for example, Samsung has the technology to scan your irises and takes photo of your face while Apple Face ID uses a depth of 30,000 infrared dots to map your facial contours but the ultrasonic sensor uses sound waves to read your fingerprint when you unlock your phone and would reject a print from a severed finger.
